Indole derivatives including bromoindoles have been isolated from the South Pacific marine sponges Rhopaloeides odorabile and Hyrtios sp. Their structures were established through analysis of mass spectra and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data. Their potential inhibitory phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)), antioxidant and cytotoxic activities were evaluated. The new derivative 5,6-dibromo-L-hypaphorine (9) isolated from Hyrtios sp. revealed a weak bee venom PLA2 inhibition (IC50 0.2 mM) and a significant antioxidant activity with an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value of 0.22. The sesquiterpene aureol (4), also isolated from Hyrtios sp., showed the most potent antioxidant activity with an ORAC value of 0.29.

Bioisosteric modification on melatonin: synthesis of new naphthalene derivatives, in vitro antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity studies BJPS
Shirinzadeh,Hanif; Ghalia,Mohammed; Tascioglu,Alev; Adjali,Ferial Intissar; Gunesacar,Gulsen; Gurer-Orhan,Hande; Suzen,Sibel.
Melatonin (MLT) is a strong free radical scavenger that protects the body from the deleterious effects of excess oxidants. Synthesis of MLT analogue compounds with antioxidant potency has recently attracted the interest of researchers. In general, the strategy consists of modifying the groups in the different sites of the indole ring or replacing the indole ring with an analogue. As part of our ongoing research, the antioxidant capacity and cytotoxicity of newly synthesized MLT analogue naphthalene derivatives were evaluated. The radical scavenging activity was tested by a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Most of the synthesized compounds showed significant antioxidant activity in comparison to MLT. The structure-activity relationship was...

Evaluation of cytotoxic potential of latex of Calotropis procera and Podophyllotoxin in Allum cepa root model Biocell
Sehgal,R.; Roy,S.; Kumar,V.L..
In the present study we have utilized the Allium cepa root tip meristem model to evaluate the cytotoxic and anti-mitotic activities of latex of Calotropis procera (DL) and podophyllotoxin. Standard cytotoxic drug cyclophosphamide and non-cytotoxic drugs cyproheptadine and aspirin served as controls. Like cyclophosphamide, both DL and podophyllotoxin significantly inhibited the growth of roots and mitotic activity in a dose-dependent manner. However, podophyllotoxin was more potent in this regard and produced root decay. Cyproheptadine and aspirin, on the other hand, showed a marginal effect on the root growth and mitotic activity at much higher concentrations.

ABSTRACT Euphorbia tirucalli (L.), commonly known as aveloz, has been indiscriminately used in popular medicine to treat various illnesses. However, some components can have devastating consequences. Injury to a cell's genetic material can cause mutations, cancer, and cell death. Our main goal in this work was to evaluate the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of E. tirucalli extract on human leukocytes. For this purpose, we performed a phytochemical analysis to evaluate the plant's components. In the second step, we treated cultured human leukocytes with different concentrations of the dry extract of the plant and then evaluated the oxidative and genotoxic profiles of these leukocytes. We found that at 1% and 10% concentrations, the aveloz extract acted as a...

Protective effect of Hemidesmus indicus R.Br. root extract against cisplatin-induced cytogenetic damage in mouse bone marrow cells Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ananthi,Rajagopal; Chandra,Nallathambi; Santhiya,Sathiyavedu T..
The aqueous extract of Hemidesmus indicus roots was investigated for its in vivo antigenotoxic effect against cisplatin-induced cytogenetic damage. Swiss albino mice were administered with various doses of the extract either singly (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) or as split doses (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg bw/day) for five consecutive days by oral gavage. As endpoints, chromosome aberrations, micronuclei in polychromatic erythrocytes, mitotic index and PCE/NCE ratio were estimated. The extract protected the bone marrow cells from cisplatin-induced genotoxicity in an inverse dose-dependent manner. However, the extract was cytotoxic at all doses. But, under split dose regime it conferred a higher level of genoprotection and was not cytotoxic at the lower two...
